To their fans, they are out of this world, but One Direction have come one step closer to making that a reality. The chart-topping boyband will film their video for new single Drag Me Down at the NASA Space Center in Houston, Texas.

The boys – Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan – managed to convince bosses at the iconic headquarters to allow them to use their airfields, training equipment and facilities to shoot the promo.

The video is being directed by long term collaborator Ben Winston, who also shot the videos for Best Song Ever and Story Of My Life.

The spectacular footage, shot in secret on Thursday, will be a fitting accompaniment to the track, which broke records upon its release last week.

The comeback single, the group’s first as a four piece looks, was released without any fanfare last Friday and shot straight to no1 on iTunes in 86 countries.

The surprise release came just days after former member Zayn Malik slammed the band as he announced a solo signing to rival label RCA records to finally make what he called ‘real music’.

Make space: The boys - Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan - managed to convince bosses at the iconic headquarters to allow them to use their airfields, training equipment and facilities to shoot the promoThe latest release, which follows November 2014’s Night Changes (the last single before Zayn’s departure in March 2015), was top worldwide Twitter trend for over ten hours after the band took to their Twitter account with the news.

It has been reported that 22k tweets per minute were being sent by the global fanbase, and 3.2 million tweets had been posted by 3pm.

The four-piece gave their loyal supporters plenty of chance to purchase it because it was dropped on iTunes and Spotify worldwide at 6.30am (UK time).

Radio and online previews followed later but the frenzy had already begun, it seems.

It’s a firm show of support for the former X Factor contestants, whose fan base has been divided by Zayn’s solo career and the news that 23-year-old Louis is set to become a first-time father in 2016.

Admirers of the boyband were sent into turmoil when it was revealed that Louis was expecting a child with ‘close friend’ Briana Jungwirth but the release cements his future within the band.

Announcing their latest news on Twitter, Liam, 21, informed fans: ‘Bit of a surprise! Check out our new single! It’s called Drag Me Down & I hope you love it as much as we do.’

Niall, also 21, tweeted afterwards: ‘Finally we get to say this ! have waited a long time but our new single Drag Me Down is out !!!’
